Recently, I spent about 2 hours in a lobby waiting for my windshield to be replaced. Naturally, I brought along some research books to read while I waited. I was very excited to be reading, The Thief, the Cross and the Wheel: Pain and the Spectacle of Punishment in Medieval and Renaissance Europe by Mitchell B, Merback.
Now, to me, reading this book was perfectly natural. I’ve got a stack of execution books and articles ready to be absorbed for my new project. When my husband called me to see how things were going with the car and what I was doing to keep myself entertained, I answered with, “I’m just reading a book on medieval execution and torture. Its fascinating, lots of illustrations and explanations.”
What do you think the others in the lobby did? Oh, yes, I got some weird looks! Maybe a few whispers behind pale hands. It just made me laugh all the more. My husband even said nonchalantly, “Sounds good. Enjoy,” because to him, it was totally normal for me to be reading a book like that.
This is not the first time I’ve had weird looks and whispers come my way, and I know it won’t be my last. But as fellow historical writers, I thought you’d get a kick out of that!
What sort of things have you said or done in regards to research that got you a weird look?

What is it that gets us all revved up about a Highlander? Well I have my top ten reasons, and in no particular order… AND I’m excited to announce that my new Highlander time-travel erotic romance will be releasing in less than a month!!! 1. Nothing under the kilt. 2. Gerard Butler. 3. Strength, power, stealth, wit. 4. Kilts in general. 5. The brogue… sigh. 6. The Lawson whiskey commercials. (you must visit this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQonTlU66I) 7. Julie Garwood’s Scottish historicals. 8. Braveheart. 9. History so dramatic its hard to believe its real. 10. Castles & lochs.

Every year my husband and I take our kids to the Renaissance Festival (and if we can get away from them, we’ll go again just the two of us!) It is this time during the year that I can immerse myself, literally, in the time period I love, and mingle with others who are just as obsessed with history, royals, mead, turkey legs, jousting, etc… While I don’t dress up (yet), I do dress up my little pretties. This year, we wanted to get our entire family involved, and we did pretty well! Since one of our daughters
