I found a wonderful new reference book, 4,000 YEARS OF UPPITY WOMEN. How can you NOT get a book about rebellious belles, daring dames, and headstrong heroines through the ages? For Women’s History Month, there are dozens of women to choose from, so I actually choose two, a mother and daughter – who printed the Declaration of Independence.

by Anna Kathryn Lanier One of the most famous photographs in the world is of the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jimo, four days after three divisions of U.S. Marines had landed on the island 700 miles south of Tokyo. But the action captured on film was not without a price. Sixty-seven years ago today at 8:59 a.m., February 19, 1945, the first wave of Marines landed on Red Beach One for a decisive, bloody and month-long battle. As the title suggestions, there are 365 short essays on a historical event, one for each day of the year. So, here it is, an hour before my blog should be posted and I’m scrambling to find a topic. I actually found two or three events in GREAT STORIES FROM HISTORY that took place this week. One essay was on Emma Hamilton, Admiral Horatio Nelson’s mistress. Very interesting story

By Anna Kathryn Lanier Okay, here’s a pet peeve of mine….those who don’t know when the twelve days of Christmas are. These days I’m seeing all sorts of references to the Twelve Days of Christmas. Between now and Christmas: get free books, recipes, or enter a contest. The only problem is that NOW is not the Twelve Days of Christmas. They are not the twelve days BEFORE Christmas. They are the twelve days AFTER Christmas. This mixed-up reference, is to me, as maddening as those who object to Christmas decorations before Halloween. We are putting one celebration before another.
